Efficient computation of vapor and heat diffusion between hydrometeors in a numerical model

چکیده
We present an algorithm for representing diffusion of sensible heat and vapor between hydrometeors and air that is formulated from implicit numerical equations and is therefore stable for long numerical model timesteps, but is solved explicitly without requiring iteration. Liquid, ice, and mixed-phase hydrometeor categories are incorporated into the system, and latent heat of fusion released or absorbed during the diffusion process is accounted for. The method has been Ž . incorporated into the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System RAMS which prognoses ice–liquid potential temperature as its principal thermodynamic variable, but may be adapted to other models as well. Simulations with RAMS used as a parcel model are presented and demonstrate the performance of the new algorithm. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

متن کاملNumerical Study of Spherical Vapor Layer Growth Due to Contact of a Hot Object and Water
Vapor film formation and growth due to contact of a hot body and other liquids arise in some industrial applications including nuclear fuel rods, foundry and production of paper. The possibility of a steam explosion remains in most of these cases which could result in injuries and financial damage. Due to the importance of such phenomenon, this study deals with vapor layer forming, growth, and ...

متن کاملClassification of hydrometeors using microwave brightness temperature data from AMSU-B over Iran
The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) installed on the NOAA-15, 16, and 17 satellites, is the new generation of a series of microwave imagers/sounders that can sense atmospheric moisture and other hydrometeors through clouds. This paper demonstrates the potential of multi-frequency AMSU-B data for classifying different types of hydrometeors. Ten types of these hydrometers have been co...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Heat and Moisture Transfer in Textile Materials by a Finite Volume Method
This paper focuses on the numerical study of heat and moisture transfer in clothing assemblies, based on a multi-component and multiphase flow model which includes heat/moisture convection and conduction/diffusion as well as phase change. A splitting semi-implicit finite volume method is proposed for solving a set of nonlinear convection-diffusion-reaction equations, in which the calculation of...
